About MBTA Commuter Rail Fare Payment
The MBTA Commuter Rail provides regional rail service to Greater Boston and extends to Providence, RI and other areas. It uses a zone-based fare system.
Payment Methods
The MBTA Commuter Rail supports multiple payment methods:
- mTicket: Mobile ticketing app with QR codes - most common method
- CharlieCard: Reloadable smart card (Fairmount Line Zone 1A only, validation required at the station before boarding)
- Contactless payment cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover for Zone 1A travel only
- Paper tickets: Available at ticket windows and vending machines
- Cash or credit card: Pay conductor on board with cash or credit card (surcharge applies if station has ticket machine or ticket window)
Transfer Policy
